Improving Your Bathroom

The bathroom has become one of the most popular rooms to renovate. Improving your bathroom will increase make your home more attractive to potential buyers as well as give your more enjoyment from your home. Like the kitchen, the bathroom should be designed around functionality but a few improvements can also dramatically increase overall likeability.

As with all home improvement projects, take special care in deciding to take on a project yourself. Although ‘doing it yourself’ is now very popular, bungled bathroom improvements can cost you a LOT of money. This is true obviously because water is involved and the smallest issues can quickly become large and expensive problems. A professional has the experience necessary to avoid such issues – a bathroom is not the room for a beginner to remodel. One thing to ask yourself when considering hiring a professional is how elaborate the bathroom improvement project is going to be. Often switching faucets or upgrading lights can be done yourself whereas new plumbing obviously should be left to the professional.

Here are some things you might think about however whether you chose to use a professional or are improving the bathroom yourself. First, be sure to do the proper planning and research before deciding on a project. Often replacing large items might not be necessary as alternatives are available like surrounds or coverings. You might save yourself a lot of money and yet get the look you need with such options. Second, be sure that the ‘look’ of the bathroom doesn’t impede upon its functionality or risk safety. Obviously, many times ‘simple’ means easier to clean and maintain as well. Finally, if you are considering hiring a professional, be sure to give yourself all the time necessary to make the right choice. Talk to friends and others and get recommendations rather than just looking in the yellow pages. Be sure to have the time to interview three or more and get multiple quotes during the process that are very detailed…..be sure that you understand any risks for something going over budget.
