Allergies and Other Concerns about Air Quality During Home Improvement Projects

A remodeling or home improvement project often kicks up a lot of dust and other particles into the air. If not handled well, this could lead to poor air quality and serious risks to someone with severe allergies. By having the contractor follow proper preparation tips and a few easy rules, you can often dramatically decrease any risks and improve air quality during the project.

One of the first things you might consider doing prior to a home improvement project is learning about all of the material you will be dealing with…be especially careful of course if asbestos or other such items are involved.

One thing you should consider doing is sealing of the area that is being remodeled with plastic sheets so that the dust or material will be somewhat contained. In addition, you should:

  • Close all of the vents in that room.
  • Set up a fan to pull out potential contaminants through a window while you are working
  • Wear a mask and other protective gear
  • Keep the area as clean as possible by vacuuming and washing, depending on the project.
  • Changing the filter in your furnace often during the project to help protect the air in the rest of the house.
  • Think carefully about what new materials you are putting in the house. There are many ‘green’ home improvement guides that can help you select materials to improve the overall health of your home with hard floor instead of carpeting, etc..
  • If you are concerned about the impact on air quality or the allergies of a loved one, then you might consider not doing the project yourself but rather hiring a professional contractor. Make sure they are trained on all aspects of a healthy remodeling project and have the proper equipment and materials.
