Green Home Improvement Projects

‘Going green’ with your home means making your home more healthy, comfortable, and most of all, efficient. This includes improving the indoor air quality, reducing waste, heating or cooling more efficiently and many other factors. Green remodeling or home improvement projects are becoming more popular because of health issues, increasing energy costs and a general concern over available natural resources.

Overall green remodeling proves to be very beneficial for homeowners. It can reduce the overall costs of the home by increasing efficiency thereby also increasing the value of the home. ‘Green’ projects can lead to a reduction in waste products generated by the house.

Green remodeling can be done in small ways and they don’t necessarily have to change the entire home. Some of these ways include:

  • Using recycled materials for common household products -- countertops, patio pavers, or bookcases, for example
  • Choosing ‘green’ paints and sealants
  • Using programmable thermostats
  • Purchasing energy efficient appliances
  • Using natural flooring
  • Using energy efficient lighting
  • Insulating hot water pipes and other parts of the house that might be not as efficient as desired.
  • Asking a contractor to use less waste on the job site and recycle the rest
