Important Tips for Hiring a Contractor

Finding the right contractor for you project is important, as it can lead to the success or failure of your remodeling. There are now easy ways to find local contractors in your area on the internet as well as through the traditional sources. When considering the best contractor for your project, consider the cost, timing and quality customer service.

As with all things, choosing the best contractor for your project often depends on the time and energy you put into the decision. Try to always leave yourself enough time to get recommendations from people you trust and then meet and get estimates from several different contractors.

Then it is recommended to consider many of the qualities in a contractor that you would look for in a friend:

  • Do they seem honest? (Check with the Better Business Bureau, your local building department and other sources to verify your instincts.)
  • Do they carefully listen to what you want?
  • Do they seem like someone that is good to their word or someone you can trust? (Ask their reference that question, just to be sure!)
  • Do they seem experienced in the type of project you are looking to do?
  • Do they takes pride in their work?

Meeting the Contractors

There are also things you should keep in mind when meeting a contractor for the first time. Always try to verify the credentials of the contractor. Always ask for references (don’t hesitate to call those references – a reputable contractor will be happy you did).and make sure you verify the license or insurance information if possible. Check that the company is listed in area directories or trusted online resources and has a good record with the Better Business Bureau.

It is also often good to choose a local remodeler as they have to perform quality if they want to sustain their business. Also, many states, require contractors to be licensed and or bonded, so contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor meets all requirements.

Checking a Contractor's Insurance

Remodeling contractors should carry their own worker's compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance—and most states require it. Ask the remodeling contractor for a current copy of the license and feel free to call the insurance company if needed. Ask to see a copy of the remodeling contractor's certification of insurance for the name of his or her insurance agency to verify coverage.

Be careful of contractors that put pressure on you or use sales ‘tricks’ like telling you that you will get a special deal if you act right away. In addition, avoid contractors who exhibit poor communication skills, are impatient and do not listen to you. If the contractor is not accessible, be cautious about moving ahead.
