When packing your bedroom you might start first with your closet. Before packing everything, think about whether you really need it. Otherwise, sell or give it away.
Other tips:
- When packing your clothes, try using a wardrobe box. Trying to move them any other way often results in costly dry cleaning bills.
- Other clothes can remain folded in their regular dresser drawers or you can use larger boxes and clothes are not that dense and a larger box would not be that heavy.
- As with all of your boxes, always makes sure they stay away from any sort of water or condensation of course. When moving lamp shades, comforters, pillows, or any other large yet light (not dense) items it is always good to use an extra large moving box.
- You can pack most of your clothes as ballast that fills boxes if you like. However, you might want to consider hiring or buying wardrobe boxes from your mover. All you need to do is put the box together, hang your clothes in it and they'll keep their shape during the move.
- You can simply put the contents into the wardrobe boxes ahead of the move and use those after you have taken the wardrobes apart.
- Putting clothes in bags might seem a good solution but it can be problematic. They tear easily and offer little protection from damage. It's far better to use clothes to balance boxes, fill drawers and wardrobe spaces etc.
- When moving your dressers you might consider filling the drawers with small breakable items or very light items and cushion well with the loose clothes in that drawer. Always be sure to secure the drawers with tape or string and don’t put heavy items in the drawers….the dresser will be heavy enough on its own!
- But putting light and breakable items in the drawers is often better than packing in its own box.
Packing Mirrors
When packing your mirrors be sure to tape them with an ‘x’ with masking tape and then to pack in special boxes that you can purchase from a mover or truck rental company. That box should be lined if possible by you with newsprint for added cushioning or the mirror should be wrapped in a blanket. If space allows you can also consider putting two wrapped mirrors in each box…the important thing is that there is no room for movement. Face the glass sides toward each other but with a blanked or packing paper in between. Obviously tape the box shut and mark with a large ‘FRAGILE’ on the box.
How to Pack Your Bed
You should probably leave packing your bed for the last, as it can be the more difficult and heaviest item. Here's how to approach it:
- When you disassemble the bed frame be sure to wrap the frame with paper or blankets and tie the rails and cross-pieces together with string or packing tape.
- Mark on a piece of paper (and attach to the pieces) where all of the pieces fit together for reassembly.
- Protect your mattress and box spring with a mattress cover which is sold almost everywhere boxes are sold.
- Towels, shirts, and non breakables can be packed in garbage bags. Make sure to use heavy bags with ties, and make sure the bags aren't packed so full that they are hard to handle.
