Packing Tips – Living or Dining Room

The living room can be a little more complicated than the bedroom to move because of all the electronic equipment including things like the TV, the stereo etc. In addition you also need to take special care when packing draperies, wall decorations, and lamps.

Careful packing is required for all electronics and it is always best if you have saved the original box that they came in. If you are like most people and threw away the boxes then try to make sure that the equipment is packed snugly by filling the box with blankets, rags, cloths or packing material like paper or bubble wrap.

When considering how to move your TV, often for very large TVs you might consider contacting the company to find out if it needs to be crated. If not, you should consider purchasing a special box for heavy items and TVs and make sure they are wrapped well before putting in the box. When packing your TV cabinet if it has glass doors you should remove and carefully pack separately. If this is not possible then secure them safely for the move.

Also:

  • When packing your nice furniture you may want to wrap in bubble wrap to protect it from scratching and to keep dust and dirt off the upholstery.
  • Many people also might choose to use stretch wrap or blankets to also prevent small scratches and dust from damaging your furniture.
  • Use lamp boxes stuffed with packing paper or bubble wrap.
  • The best way to move drapes and curtains is probably to use a moving box called a garment or wardrobe box. You can hang the drapes and curtains over the metal bar on the top to keep them as wrinkle free and protected as possible.
  • Make sure to keep any curtain rods or other items all together in that same box.
  • For your tables or other furniture, remove the legs and tie together. Put hardware in small sealed envelope taped to underside of table top. It is always a good idea to wrap the table in a blanket or other types of protection. Mirrors and paintings should always be well wrapped in paper and packed in boxes.
  • As always, make sure that you mark on the box what it is. Use masking tape to make a large 'X' on any mirrors, curio cabinets, anything with a lot of glass. This may prevent it from breaking from vibration but will help contain broken glass as much of it will stick to the tape. Consider removing glass panels and packing them flat inside a drawer or mirror box.
  • Take the measurements to a packing store and you can have a box made.
  • If you have very valuable couches, chairs or other upholstered pieces you might want to try to shrink-wrap them or ask the moving company to do those items for you.
  • If you have a piano….don’t consider moving it yourself or with help. You should hire a special mover that is very experienced in moving pianos as they can easily be damaged during the move.
  • Finally when moving your carpet or rug you might want to have them cleaned prior to your move. Roll them as tight as you can and then secure them with rope or plastic ties. It is best to then also wrap them in plastic for extra protection.
